Abstract:Objective To propose a scientific classification method for surgical instruments, addressing the subjectivity and neglect
of market supply risk in the current hospital surgical instrument management, which will provide a basis for improving the level of
surgical instrument logistics management. Methods The outbound data of 151 surgical instruments from H Hospital in 2021 was
collected. An indicator system for surgical instrument classification was constructed using the Kraljic matrix. Principal component
analysis (PCA) was employed to reduce the dimensionality of the indicator system, presenting the complex distribution of surgical
instruments in a lower-dimensional space. Based on the interpretation of principal components and the distribution of surgical
instruments, we classified them using the Kraljic matrix theory. Results Combining the Kraljic matrix with domain expertise, we
developed a 10-feature indicator system and extracted 2 principal components using PCA. Principal Component 1 was dominated
by economic value, while Principal Component 2 was influenced by market supply risk. Using the Kraljic matrix, we categorized
surgical instruments into strategic (22 items), leverage (15 items), bottleneck (46 items), and routine (68 items) classes. We proposed
a classification management method for surgical instruments. Conclusion This research on surgical instrument classification
management, based on the Kraljic matrix and PCA, provides a practical and scientific approach for surgical instrument logistics
management.
