Abstract:Objective To evaluate the effect of low-dose protocols on image qualities and registration accuracy of kV cone beam
CT (CBCT), and seek an optimized low-dose protocal to reduce the risk of secondary carcinogenesis caused by CBCT. Methods Low mA
protocol, fast protocol and ultra-low dose protocol were utilized as low-dose protocols in this study. The image quality and automatic
registration accuracy of CBCT images reconstructed with low-dose protocols and standard protocols in head & neck, chest and pelvis
modes were quantitatively evaluated. Results Compared with standard protocols, low-dose protocols increased noise (head &neck 5.6,
chest 4.9) and decreased low contrast resolution (head & neck 1%, chest 0.74%) in head & neck and chest scanning. Nevertheless,
low mA protocol could improve image uniformity in pelvis mode (standard: 1.9%, Low mA: 1.32%, UL-dose: 1.32%). Spatial
resolution and geometric accuracy were consistent in all protocols, 3 pairs could be distinguished and geometric uncertainties were
less than 1 mm. The registration accuracy of all protocols was no more than 0.6 mm. Conclusion Low-dose protocols of CBCT could
decrease image dose and scanning time while maintaining image quality and registration accuracy. It can be advised for children in
CBCT scan.
