Abstract:Objective To analyze the content of hydroxyapatite (HAP) and calcium (Ca) in the vertebral cortex of lumbar degenerative
osteoarthropathy by spectral CT material separation technique. Methods A total of 78 patients (44 males and 34 females) with
an average age of (64.66±6.43) who underwent plain CT scan of the lumbar spine from September 2020 to January 2021 were
collected. The HAP (water) and CA (water) -based material images were reconstructed by the CT spectral scanning mode, and the
average HAP density values and Ca density values of the anterior, upper, lower, and posterior vertebral cortices of the vertebral body
were measured on the midsagittal plane. The differences of measured values at each edge of vertebral body, different age groups
(50≤group 1<60, 60≤group 2<70 and 70≤group 3<80) and different genders were compared. One-way analysis of variance was
used to compare the differences of HAP and Ca density values between the four edges of vertebral body and different age groups丨
independent sample t-test was used to compare the differences of HAP and Ca density values at four edges of vertebral body in
different genders. Results There were significant differences in HAP density and Ca density between the upper, lower, anterior and
posterior margins of the vertebral body cortex (P all <0.01). The density values of the two substances both showed that there was
no significant difference between the upper and lower edges cortex. The density values of the anterior edge were higher than that
of the upper and lower margins, and the density values of the posterior edge were lower than that of the upper and lower edges. In
the comparison of different ages, there was only significant difference in the content of HAP and Ca in the upper edge of group 2
and group 3 (P=0.009, P=0.019). The HAP density values of the upper edge and the lower edge (P<0.01, P=0.026) and Ca density
(P<0.01, P=0.018) were statistically significant in different genders. Conclusion Spectral CT material separation technology can
quantitatively analyze the HAP and Ca content in the vertebral cortex, which is helpful to determine the degree of degenerative
lesions and further elucidate the pathogenesis of lumbar degenerative diseases.
