Study on the Dose and the Calculation Time with Difference Grid Sizes
for Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy Plan

Abstract:Objective To compare the difference of the dose and the calculation time among the three types grid size in the Pinnacle
radiotherapy planning system. Methods From January 2016 to December 2016, 10 cases of nasopharyngeal carcinoma radiotherapy
plans and 10 cases of cervical cancerwere plans were selected. The dose and the calculation time were recalculated and compared
while the grid size were adjusted to 2 mm×2 mm, 2 mm×4 mm, 4 mm×4 mm. Two independent sample t tests were used to
compare the differences with P<0.05 as a statistical difference. Results The mean value of the calculation time in the grid size of
2 mm×2 mm was 371.52 s, 106.43 s in the 2 mm×4 mm, 44.44 s in the 4 mm×4 mm. There was no statistical difference for the
dose among the three types grid size (P>0.05). Conclusion The difference between 2 mm×2 mm and 2 mm×4 mm was small,
while the calculation time in 2 mm×4 mm was reduced by 2/3. Therefore, the grid size of 2 mm×4 mm was recommended in
clinical practice.
