Manufacturing and Application of a Solid Model for Ventricular Puncture Surgical Simulation

Abstract:Based on brain CT and MRI image data, this study used 3D printing technology to produce patients’ brain entity model, which was applied to simulate lateral ventricle puncture operation. Data of scalp, skull, vessel, ventricular and brain tissue were obtained by CT and MRI scan, and digital models of each were reconstructed by Mimics software. Using 3D printing techniques, the model of a more realistic nature could be created, which contained the main part of the brain, the hollow lateral ventricles and brain tissues made by hydrogel, mimicking real brain tissue. Finally, the operation of the simulated lateral ventricle puncture was carried out to validate the feasibility of the surgical training on the model. The brain model could visually display the main structure of human brain tissue. By injecting liquid, the ventricular could achieve a certain amount of pressure which could simulate the real intracranial pressure environment of the patient. The sensation of simulation was almost the same as that of the actual operation. The 3D printed brain solid model can be used for clinical training, teaching and assessment.
