Abstract:Bacterial infections associated with implantable devices are serious clinical problems that need to be solved urgently. Medical metal materials including stainless steels, titanium alloys, cobaltbased alloys, etc are widely used to manufacture various medical implantable medical devices. These medical metals will be significantly antibacterial once added with proper amount of copper element with strong antibacterial ability and thus continuously release trace amount of copper ions in the biological environment, which is a new idea and an effective approach to reduce bacterial infections in clinic. This article reviews the relevant research progress, indicating that antibacterial medical metal materials possess strong and broad-spectrum antibacterial functions and can inhibit formations of bacterial biofilms, thus have wide application prospects.
