Abstract:The equivalent-time sampling interval is one of the most important parameters for the
impulse-radio ultra-wideband (IR-UWB) radar that concerns the remote measurement of respiration,
which was theoretically and experimentally investigated in this paper for the first time. According to
the measurement results, the interval had to be smaller than half of the thorax displacement due to the
respiration. Therefore, it should be as small as possible for improving the respiration measurement
capability of the IR-UWB radar. The equivalent-time sampling period of IR-UWB radar was also
determined by the equivalent-time sampling interval. Reduction of the equivalent-time sampling
period had no obvious influence on the improvement of the respiration measurement capability. The
study in this paper presents significance for the design of the IR-UWB radar in the application of
remote vital sign measurement.
