Abstract:Objective The non-invasive blood pressure detection performance of reflex forehead photoplethysmography (PPG) and
transmitted finger PPG was compared by establishing a blood pressure detection model based on PPG characteristic parameters.
Methods Forehead and finger PPG signals, as well as reference blood pressure values were collected from 130 adult volunteers. The
data were randomized to a training set (80 cases) and a testing set (50 cases). Twenty time-domain parameters of the preprocessed
PPG signals were extracted and partial least squares regression was used to establish the systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic
blood pressure (DBP) detection models of PPG in forehead and finger, respectively. The performances of the two methods were
compared with the reference blood pressure values. Results The correlation coefficients between SBP and DBP estimated by
forehead PPG blood pressure detection model and reference blood pressure were 0.78 and 0.55, the absolute errors were 11.33 mmHg
and 8.26 mmHg, respectively. The accuracy for abnormal blood pressure detection was 90%. There were no statistical differences
between the forehead PPG blood pressure detection model and the finger PPG blood pressure detection model (P>0.05).
Conclusion This study demonstrated that PPG signals collected from the forehead and fingers have no influence on the performance
of blood pressure detection, and both can be used for continuous and non-invasive blood pressure monitoring.
