Abstract:Objective To develop a new type of axial loading device for lumbar MRI examination, which is used for the diagnosis
of lumbar disc herniation (LDH). Methods The new type of axial loading MRI device for lumbar spine includes two parts: load
wearable device and pressure device. Load wearing devices mainly include shoulder support belts, hip support belts, connecting
belts and various adjustment buckles; pressure devices include air cylinders, snorkels and control systems. Through preliminary
application, the differences of comfort score, examination time and imaging data between psoas-relaxed position and axial load
position were compared. Results A total of 30 volunteers successfully completed the inspection with the new load device. There was
no statistically significance (P>0.05) in comfort score and examination time between the two postures. Differences of the sagittal
diameter of the spinal canal and the dural sac cross-sectional area in L4~5 were statistically significant (P<0.05). Conclusion The
device is reasonable in design and convenient to use. It can effectively implement lumbar spine loads, simulate the pathological
conditions of the lumbar spine in the real state, and is expected to improve the diagnostic accuracy of LDH.
