Abstract:Objective To reveal the technological innovation of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) by analyzing the invention patents. Methods This paper retrieved invention patents of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation in the Patsnap database,
and disclosed the development trends from the perspective of technological innovation time trend, technological innovation life
cycle, technological innovation source, technological innovation entity and technological innovation hotspot using patentometrics
combined with content analysis. Results There was a certain scale of high-tech achievements in the field of extracorporeal membrane
oxygenation, with 167 invention patents, and technological innovation continued to be active. The United States and China were
major sources of technological innovation. The American technological innovation entities lead the global development, and Chinese
ones were mainly enterprises and hospitals, with its enterprises playing an important role in technological innovation in this field. The
technological innovation hotspots focused on the following aspects: extracorporeal circulation, extracorporeal life support, hollow
fiber, ECMO equipment and blood processing. Conclusion This research analyzed the invention patents of extracorporeal membrane
oxygenation and provided technological support for enterprise R&D of ECMO from the perspective of information science, which
would promote localization of high-end medical device products.
