Research on Application of Ultrasound in Diagnosis of Correlation between
Brachial Artery Endothelial Functions and Carotid Intima-Media Thickness
in Young Patients with Hypertension and Obesity

Abstract:Objective To discuss the application of ultrasound for identification of changes in brachial artery
FMD (Flow-Mediated Dilation) and carotid IMT (Intima-Media Thickness) in young patients with hypertension
and obesity. Methods High-resolution ultrasound was applied to measure the IMT and inner diameter changes
of the brachial artery of 40 youth obesity & hypertension patients (Youth Obesity & Hypertension Group) and
40 healthy people (Control Group). Results The IMT thickening of Youth Obesity & Hypertension Group was
higher than that of Control Group, with statistically significant difference (P<0.05). Youth Obesity & Hypertension
Group had greater baseline diameter of brachial artery and lower Flow-Mediated Dilation than Control Group,
both with statistically significant difference (P<0.05). No statistically significant difference was seen between the
atherosclerosis plaque detection rates of two groups (P>0.05). Reduced FMD and IMT thickening had obvious
negative correlation in patients with both obesity and hypertension (P<0.01). Conclusion Essential hypertension
and obesity among young people were closely related to the brachial artery FMD and the thickness of the carotid
artery IMT, indicating that obesity and blood pressure factors in youth IMT and FMD had significant correlation.
