Abstract:Objective To explore the clinical value of MRI in evaluating breast prosthesis after
augmentation mammoplasty. Methods The breast MRI data of 29 patients (58 breast prostheses) who
underwent augmentation mammoplasty from March 2011 to December 2015, were retrospectively
reviewed. The prosthetic shape, position and capsular of implant in MRI were evaluated. Then the
mammary gland disease and its correlation with the prosthesis were also enhanced for examination.
Results The signals of 35 breast prostheses were even, the signals of polyacrylamide hydrogel prosthesis
on short time inversion recovery (STIR) sequence were higher than that of silicone prosthesis; 11
prostheses had intact contour, but obviously deformation and transposing with strip shadow inside;
12 prostheses were ruptured in contour with discontinuous capsular, in addition, prostheses fractured
and spread inside of the mammary gland section, 3 of them entered into ectopectoralis and armpits;
the enhanced scanning of 42 breasts indicated implant capsular structures were more clear on volume
image breast assessment (VIBRANT) than the plain scanning, and the implant capsular of silicone gel
showed thicker than that of polyacrylamide hydrogel (P<0.01). Conclusion MRI could well display the
formation, shape and distribution range of the breast prosthesis, along with the lesion of mammary gland
and chest wall after surgery, which could be used as the first choice for postoperative evaluation of the
augmentation mammoplasty.
