Abstract:ObjectiveTo study the impedance variation of ischemic stroke and its’ secondary brain edema to distinguish the two types of brain injuries. Methods Two-electrode method was used to measure impedance of rats’ brain in vivo continuously. Then we analyzed the impedance variation over time, and the microscopic morphology parameters were analyzed by Image-Pro Plus as comparison and verification of the impedance variation.ResultsElectrical impedance of rat ischemic brain has risen 10%~20% after 6~8 h of brain ischemia, where the peak of the electrical impedance shows out. Then the impedance reduced over time. And there was a good correlation between the impedance variation and the microscopic morphology parameters.ConclusionBioelectrical impedance measurement technique can be used to distinguish ischemic stroke and secondary brain edema, as indicated by the impedance variation of rat ischemic brain over time.
