Abstract:This article studied the antibacterial performance of a novel antimicrobial Cu-bearing Stainless Steel (304-Cu SS) through both in vitro and in vivo tests, which is expected to be applied in the field of medical acupuncture needles. The in vitro results showed that 304-Cu SS had better antimicrobial ability compared with 304 SS as the former had good bacterial effect in both escherichia coli and staphylococcus aureus. Meanwhile, 304-Cu SS could obviously inhibit the bacterial adhesion and the formation of bacterial biofilm. The animal test further proved that 304-Cu SS showed a great antiinfectious effect after implanted in muscle tissue of the New Zealand white rabbit. 304 Cu SS showed less number of bacteria on its surface as well as much lower infectious degree of tissue lesions around the implanting position in comparison with 304 SS. Thus 304-Cu SS has much potential to be used as an acupuncture needle material to reduce risk of patients from bacterial attack, and effectively restrain the bacterial infection caused by acupuncture needles.
