Abstract:Objective To investigate the safety and efficacy of ultrasound-guided microwave ablation combined with iodine-125 implantation in the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma. Methods From January 2009 to December 2014, 29 patients with liver cancer who underwent microwave ablation combined with radioactive iodine-125 implantation in our department were studied. The changes of lesion size, the efficiency of the treatment, and the changes of tumor markers and the number of white blood cells were observed and recorded. Results The procedure of microwave ablation were successfully performed for all the 29 patients under the guidance of ultrasound. The remaining lesions were treated with iodine-125. The next day after the microwave ablation. Follow-up were conducted within 5 to 29 months after operation. Patients reported that abdominal pain, bloating, anorexia, and other symptoms improved significantly after the treatment; tumor markers decreased significantly within 1 month after the treatment. One month after the treatment, the number of white blood cells were no significant difference compared with the number during preoperative periods. No serious complications were found. The effective rate was 34.5%, 79.3%, and 59.1% respectively. Conclusion The ultrasound-guided microwave ablation combined with iodine-125 particle implantation is a safe and effective method that is worthy of clinical application.
