MR Angiography of the Deep Cerebral Veins: Comparison and Analysis of
Four Pulse Sequences Protocols

Abstract:Objective To evaluate the display ability of enhanced gradient echo T2 star weighted angiography (ESWAN) technique in
deep cerebral vein system and to compare and analyze the differences of disparate deep cerebral vein magnetic resonance angiography
techniques. Methods The display rate of the thick cerebral deep vein and the quality of the terminal branches of the deep cerebral vein
in 35 patients were analyzed by four kinds of MRI vein imaging techniques (2D-TOF-MRV, 3D-PC-MRV, 3D-CE-MRV and ESWAN).
The diameters of bilateral cerebral veins and thalamic striatal veins obtained by ESWAN scanning were measured and compared with
DSA, the “gold standard”. Results There was no significant difference between the four methods in the relative coarse cerebral veins
(χ2=3.167, P=0.367). The display of 2D-TOF-MRV and 3D-PC-MRV to the terminal venous branches was worse than the latter two
methods (χ2=95.86, P=0.000), and there was no statistical difference in the venous display rate between ESWAN and 3D-CE-MRV
(Z=-0.07, P=0.994). The quality of ESWAN was better than that of 3D-CE-MRV (χ2=12.994, P=0.005). The diameters of bilateral
cerebral veins and thalamic striatal veins measured by ESWAN were smaller than those measured by DSA (P<0.05). Conclusion Deep
cerebral vein ESWAN imaging is valuable in quantitative measurement of deep cerebral vein diameter.
