Abstract:Objective To reduce the maintenance rate of medical instruments in ward by the quality control circle (QCC) activities.
Methods The QCC was set up and then planned, implemented, confirmed and disposed according to the ten steps of the QCC
activity. The root cause of high maintenance rate of medical instruments in geriatric wards was found out by using quality control
techniques such as Plato and fishbone diagram, and corresponding rectification measures were formulated and implemented to reduce
the maintenance rate of medical instruments. Results After the intervention of QCC, the maintenance rate of medical instruments in
geriatric wards decreased from 23.5% before the activity to 11.2% after the activity, and the difference was statistically significant
(P<0.01). The satisfaction of inpatients increased from 94.5% to 98.7%, and the difference was statistically significant (P<0.01).
The score of nursing staff related theoretical knowledge was improved from the score of (72.4±6.42) to (89.3±5.87), and the
score of operation skills was improved from the score before the activity (78.2±8.04) to the score after the activity (88.6±9.43),
showing statistical difference (P<0.01). The satisfaction of nurses increased from 90.5% to 95.6%, and the difference was statistically
significant (P<0.01). In addition, the self-learning abilities, problems finding, analysis and solving abilities, coordination and
communication abilities, QCC technique application, nurses’ satisfaction and team cooperation have been improved. Conclusion The
application of QCC activities to the standard management of hospital equipment in the ward has a significant effect, including reduces
the maintenance rate of hospital equipment in the ward, improves work efficiency and quality and increases patients’ satisfaction.
Meanwhile, the enthusiasm, creativity and initiative of the staff in quality management are enhanced, which improves the satisfaction
of nurses.
