This paper proposed a method for reading the results of erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) by image processing, and
a new ESR analyzer was designed based on this method. This design used the image processing method instead of the cumbersome
Westergren manual work. When the sample was placed into the machine, the camera was drived to the sample by stepping motor and
took a picture of the sample. At the end of the measurement, the camera was fixed relative to the sample under the control of stepping
motor, and took a picture of the sample again. Then, the initial and final images were processed by digital silhouette method, and the
ESR result was obtained and displayed. Compared with the existing infrared obstacle method, this design method is more flexible and
can be extended.
