Abstract:Objective In this paper, a bone mineral measurement method called intelligent radiographic absorptiometry (i-RA) was
described and the measurement results were presented. Methods Firstly, digital radiography (DR) images were acquired from 228
human volunteers’ forearms in vivo, then the i-RA method was used to process these DR images, the algorithm automatically placed
the region of interest on the radius centered at 1/3 of the non-dominant forearm length measured from the styloid process on the
ulna, both values of the bone mineral density (BMD) and T-score of these regions were determined. Results By comparing with the
measurement results with using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), which had been widely used for BMD measurements and
was defined as World Health Organization gold standard, the measurement results showed that the Pearson’s correlation coefficients
were 0.984 for BMD, and 0.979 for T-scores, and the ROC results showed that sensitivity was 98.5%, specificity was 98.2%, area
under curve was 0.998. Conclusion DXA method can be potentially replaced by the i-RA method to measure human radius’ BMD
and T-scores, and to diagnose osteoporosis.
