Experiments and Performance Evaluation of the Chirp Coded Excitation for
High-Frequency Medical Ultrasound Systems

Abstract:Aiming at the performance evaluation problem of various excitation modes of coding excitation technology used in high
frequency ultrasound imaging system, this paper designed an experimental system which could carry out coding and pulse excitation
and conducted a series of experiments based on it. The experimental system was composed of FPGA chip XC7K325T, excitation
module, AD7982, T/R switch, probe, two-dimensional control platform, software components, and so on, which was based on the TR
circuit board of Neusoft medical N7 system. In the experiments, comparing with the traditional excitation mode, the resolution, the
detection depth, the signal to noise ratio and the frame rate of the high frequency ultrasound imaging system were discussed. The high
frequency ultrasound imaging system was further applied to the imaging of the various phantoms. The advantages and disadvantages
of the coded excitation mode were obtained in the practical application in comparison with traditional mode. The experimental results
showed that the chirp mode could be used to optimize the penetration depth, lateral resolution, CNR and other imaging parameters of
high frequency ultrasound with some sacrifices in axial resolution.
