Effectiveness of Application of Ultrasound in Diagnosis and Differential
Diagnosis of Cystic Renal Cell Carcinoma

Abstract:Objective To investigate the effectiveness of application of ultrasound in diagnosis and
differential diagnosis of CRCC (Cystic Renal Cell Carcinoma). Methods The preoperatively ultrasonic
diagnose data of 31 CRCC patients who were treated in our hospital from January 2005 to January 2015
and confirmed surgically and pathologically were analyzed retrospectively. Results The preoperative
diagnose accordance rate of CRCC by using ultrasound was 90.3% (28/31). According to the
ultrasonographic features, the irregularly thickened cystic wall and/or separation were seen in 28
cases; 3 cases were misdiagnosed as simple renal cysts because of large cysts and thin and regular
cystic walls; acoustic cystic fluid was found in 18 cases; 12 cases were associated with wall
nodules and/or separated nodules; patchy and uneven calcification was revealed in cystic walls or
separations in 5 cases. All the patients underwent color Doppler flow imaging (CDFI) examinations;
the results showed that blood flow signals were detected in the thick cystic wall, separation or
solid component in 17 cases. At the same time, power Doppler ultrasound examinations were also
made; the results showed that blood flow signals were detected in 26 cases; the detection rate of
power Doppler ultrasound (83.8%) was higher than that of CDFI (54.8%), with statistically significant
difference (P<0.05). Conclusion Application of Ultrasound in diagnosis and differential diagnosis
of CRCC demonstrated many advantages, which could provide reliable foundation for early clinical
diagnosis of CRCC.
