Development of a New Type of Mobile ECG Monitoring System

Abstract:Objective To design a new mobile ECG monitoring system, which includes a Band-Aid ECG
(Electrocardiograph) monitor and an ECG smart phone monitoring APP. The Band-Aid ECG monitor
can obtain ECG signal from user’s body in 24 h; the ECG smart phone monitoring APP can obtain ECG
data via Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) from the Band-Aid ECG monitors, and display the ECG wave
as well as the heart rate information on its surface in real-time. Methods The low-power Bluetooth
chip CC2640 was selected as the main controller unit, coupled with the ECG electrodes and singlelead
ECG acquisition circuit to complete the single-lead ECG acquisition. The smart phone APP was
developed in the Eclipse IDE, which could obtain ECG data from the Band-Aid ECG monitors via BLE,
and draw ECG wave, display heart rate on its screen in real time. The data of ECG was stored as well in
the progress. Results The new mobile ECG monitoring system can acquire the ECG signal from user’s
body, and transfer it to the smart phone APP via BLE. The smart phone APP can display ECG waveform
in real time, and then perform the QRS detection and the calculation of real-time heart rate through the
slope threshold method. Conclusion The new mobile ECG monitoring system is convenient to carry and
stably operated, and can display ECG wave in real-time, and accurately measure the heart rate, which
proves itself with great practical value.
