Abstract:Objective To evaluate the accuracy of thyroid volume estimation between the radionuclide planar scintigraphy and
ultrasonography in patients with Graves’ disease. Methods A total of 35 patients with Graves’ hyperthyroidism admitted to hospital,
who had received radionuclide planar scintigraphy and ultrasonography, were selected as study objects. Four methods were adopted
in thyroid volume estimation for SIMENS and GE SPECT/CT radionuclide planar scintigraphy, they were: SM_Allen, SM_Himanka,
GE_Allen and GE_Himanka, repectively. Ellipsoid was used in ultrasonography (US_Ellipsoid) which was also adopted as a
standard reference. The statistical analyses were performed with one-way analysis of variance, bias, precision, relative difference
and linear regression. Results There was no statistical significance in the results of thyroid volume estimation based on radionuclide
planar scintigraphy and ultrasonography (P>0.05). The correlation coefficient, bias and precision between radionuclide planar
scintigraphy and ultrasonography were significantly different (all P<0.0001). The correlation coefficient R2 in different methods for
radionuclide planar scintigraphy were between 0.84 and 0.94. The relative difference between radionuclide planar scintigraphy and
ultrasonography were as follows: SM_Allen (5.07%±15.04%), SM_Himanka (-3.66%±19.00%), GE_Allen (0.47%±18.14%),
GE_Himanka (-2.42%±20.12%). Conclusion The results of thyroid volume estimation are significantly linear correlated between
radionuclide planar scintigraphy and ultrasonography. There is small difference among different thyroid volume estimation methods
and different types of SPECT with radionuclide planar scintigraphy. The recommended methods for thyroid volume estimation are
SM_Allen and GE_Himanka.
