Abstract:Objective To study the effect of energy spectral CT multi-artifact reduction (MAR) on metal artifact removal after internal
fixation implantation, analyze whether the tissue CT values obtained by MAR technology are true, and the display value of metal
implants by MAR and CT hardware-enhanced VR artifact-reduced reconstruction is compared with conventional reconstruction.
Methods A total of 42 patients who underwent energy spectral CT metal implant examinations in our hospital from July to
November 2021 were retrospectively collected, and their energy spectral CT data were obtained. Data of two groups with and without
MAR were reconstructed respectively for post-processing analysis. 3D reconstruction including conventional volume rendering (VR),
multi-planar reformation (MPR) and VR artifact reduction method reconstruction was performed on both groups to compare the
MAR group and no MAR group in the level of metal artifacts. The CT values and signal to noise ratio (SNR) of bones and muscles
at the metal artifact level and the non-artifact level were compared. The display effect of reconstruction using VR artifact reduction
technology and conventional 3D reconstruction were also compared and analyzed. Results The image score of the subjective
evaluation was 4 (4, 5) in the MAR group, and 1 (1, 2) in the n on-MAR group. The two doctors had a good consistency
(Kappa=0.766, 0.787). The objective evaluation of the images in the MAR group showed that the length of the artifacts at the
artifact level was significantly shorter than that of the non MAR group, and the difference was statistically significant (P<0.001),
and the tissue CT value and SNR were closer than the corresponding tissue at the non-artifact level. Compared with conventional 3D
reconstruction, the reconstruction combined with VR artifact reduction technology could display the metal implants more clearly.
Conclusion Energy spectral CT combined with MAR can effectively remove metal artifacts, and the CT value of tissue displayed at
the metal artifact level is more real and accurate, and the SNR is higher; meanwhile, the 3D reconstruction combined with VR artifact
reduction technology can better display the metal implants.
