Abstract:Objective To identify the technology frontiers of medical nanorobots based on patent citation network. Methods Patents
related to medical nanorobots were searched and collected from the Derwent innovation index (DII), and the patents of medical
nanorobots were searched and analyzed by subject retrieval method. Ucinet software was used to draw a patent co-citation network
for patents from 2016 to 2021. The patents in the citation network were clustered and visualized by VOSViewer, and the technology
frontier was identified by interpreting the clustering results. Results There were 213 patents in the field of medical nanorobots, of
which 152 patents were from 2016 to 2021, accounted for more than total of 70%. A total of 1071 patents from 2016 to 2021 were
cited, among which patents with citation frequency greater than 2 times were used to build a co-citation network. Then, two patent
citation networks were obtained. The first citation network contained 5 patents, with 2 technology frontiers identified, including
three-dimensional electromagnetic drive technology and magnetic induction drug delivery system. The second citation network
contained 11 patents, with 3 technology frontiers identified, including nanoscale drug carriers, magnetic nanoparticles and nanorobot
preparation technology. Conclusion This research identifies the technology frontiers in the field of medical nanorobots by analyzing
the patent citation network, which can provide information support for the research and development of medical nanorobots from the
perspective of information science.
