Abstract:Objective To reveal the patent competition situation of medical device field in China through the analysis of patents for
inventions and utility models from 2017 to 2019. Methods This study used patentometrics and qualitative analysis to reveal patent
competition situation of the medical device field in China in terms of number of patents applications, legal status, patent applicants
and type of patent, target market, technological hotspots, major provinces and other aspects. Results There were 344467 patent
applications from 2017 to 2019 in the medical device field in China, of which invention patents account for 40.20% and utility model
patents account for 59.80%. The technological hotspots focused on diagnostic instruments, surgical instruments, disinfection and
sterilization equipment. The most active applicants for invention and utility model patents were enterprises. In addition, universities
and research institutes were also important patent assignees for invention patents, and hospitals occupied an important position in
utility model patent applications. The patents for both invention and utility model in Guangdong, Jiangsu, Shandong, and Zhejiang
provinces were ranked in the top four in China. The technology development of enterprises in Guangdong and Jiangsu provinces
was active, and the amount of patent applications had obvious advantages. Conclusion In China, the technological innovation in the
field of medical devices was active, and enterprises, universities, research institutes and hospitals were important patent applicants.
Guangdong and Jiangsu provinces were in the leading position in technological innovation in China. This study reveals the current
patent competition situation, and provides data-based decision support for the innovative research and strategic planning of medical
devices in China from the perspective of informatics.
