Study on Measurement Method and Platform of Electrical Impedance Characteristics of
Breast Cancer After Neoadjuvant Chemotherapy

Abstract:Objective To explore the method of measuring the electrical impedance characteristics of breast cancer tissue after
neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC), a measurement platform was established to provide a theoretical foundation for studying the
electrical impedance characteristics of breast cancer tissue after NAC. Methods A cylindrical measuring box with adjustable
capacity was designed, and a platform for measuring the electrical impedance characteristics of small biological tissue was
established based on the two-electrode method. Moreover, the accuracy and feasibility of the platform were verified by measuring
the electrical impedance characteristics of gradient concentration of NaCl solution with breast cancer and per-cancer tissues in
nude mice bearing breast cancer. Results In the measuring frequency band, when the measuring length was 5 mm, the relative
error between the conductivity of NaCl solution and the theoretical value was 8.2% at 0.01 mol/L, then decreased rapidly with
increasing of the concentration of NaCl solution, down to 1.7% at 0.09 mol/L, and finally tended to flatten. When the concentration
of NaCl solution was fixed, the relative errors were decreased gradually with the increase of sample length, but all within 5%. In the
measured frequency range, the electrical conductivity of cancer tissue was 2.2~9.4 times of that of peri-cancer tissue, and the relative
permittivity of cancer tissue was 3.0~6.3 times of that of peri-cancer tissue. Conclusion The established measurement platform can
attain the accurate measurement of electrical impedance characteristics of small biological tissues, which provides a platform and
method basis for the following study of tissue impedance characteristics of breast cancer after NAC.
