Abstract:Objective To analyze the types and causes of artifacts in brain MRI scanning, and select appropriate methods to eliminate
or reduce artifacts, so as to improve the image quality of brain MRI scanning. Methods Totally 80 patients, who underwent brain
MRI in our hospital, were enrolled into this study. The number of cases of different types of artifacts were counted, the possible
causes of artifacts were analyzed, and the artifacts were eliminated or reduced by reasonable methods. Results All the artifacts were
classified into three categories: equipment related artifacts, patients related artifacts, and exogenous artifacts. There were 8 cases
of equipment related artifacts, including 2 artifacts caused by coil malfunctions and 6 wraparound artifacts. There were 52 cases
of patients related artifacts, including 24 patients’ motion artifacts, 15 vessel pulsation artifacts, and 13 implant artifacts, and there
were 20 cases of exogenous artifacts, including 12 artifacts caused by radio-frequency interferences, 7 artifacts caused by exogenous
auxiliary devices and 1 artifact caused by patient’s vomitus. Conclusion Although many factors can easily lead to artifacts,
reasonable methods can be used to avoid or reduce the artifacts. Moreover, the correction of reasonable scanning parameters, regular
maintenance and good cooperation of patients can help to avoid or eliminate equipment artifacts and reduce motion artifacts.
