Comparison of Several Platforms for Constructing Virtual Surgery System

Abstract:As we all know, virtual surgery systems are complex systems. Therefore, the proper choice of virtual reality platform will
help to build the real system quickly and effectively. The functions of the key modules in the virtual surgical system such as geometric
modeling, deformation calculation, collision detection, etc, were described in this paper. Then we focused on the comparison of
several platforms for constructing virtual surgery systems, and the characteristics of OpenGL, Unity3D, Spring System, GiPSi System
and SOFA were summarized and compared, respectively. The results showed that SOFA not only covered the advantages of the other
four systems, but also provided a fast and convenient development environment and provided hardware acceleration and support for
force feedback devices, which indicated that the SOFA was the best choice to build a virtual reality surgical auxiliary system.
