Abstract:A novel medical equipment system aiming at real-time discrimination of tumor tissues in vivo
during the process of tumor surgery is introduced in the paper. The physical principle of this system
is based on the open-ended coaxial probe method for the measurement of the dielectric properties of
tissues. The physical principle, structure of hardware, and design of software of the whole system are
presented. Using the proposed system, the dielectric properties of targeted tissues can be obtained and
the discrimination diagnosis can be fulfilled based on the fact that the dielectric properties of malignant
tissues usually dramatically change compared with those of benign tissues. The precision of the system is
proved to be high via blind measurement of liquids with the known dielectric properties. The prototype
of the novel medical equipment has been built and applied at clinic measuring near 200 cases of stomach
cancer, colorectal cancer, and breast cancer. The discrimination results are highly in accordance with the
pathological reports, indicating that the novel medical system is promising for the application of realtime
discrimination diagnosis of malignant tissues in vivo.
