Abstract:Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a noninvasive imaging method that does not involve ionizing radiation. Because of its high imaging resolution and high soft tissue contrast, it has increasingly been used in both clinical and basic science research. This review focuses on the applications of MRI in the evaluation of cardiac function. Specifically, two methods will be discussed: the assessment of ventricular anatomy and global cardiac function by cine MRI, and the quantification of regional myocardial wall motion mechanics by MRI tagging.
