Abstract:Objective To compare the imaging quality and radiation dose between full-filed digital mammography (FFDM) system and screen-film mammography (SFM) system. Methods Screen-film mammography of breast phantom was conducted. Automatic exposure photography control mode with 2 stops was used. Imaging condition and radiation dose were recorded. Then the above process was conducted with full-filed digital mammography. Subsequently condition maintained as 28 kV, the phantom with SFM system was exposed by varying mAs (70 mAs, 65 mAs, 60 mAs, 55 mAs), then the phantom with FFDM system was exposed by varying mAs (45 mAs, 36 mAs, 32 mAs, 28 mAs) also under the condition of 28 kV, and the radiation dose was recorded. Two independent radiologists read the images on monitor with the same window width and window level. The images of specks groups, nylon fibers and masses were assessed according to the standard of American College of Radiology (ACR). Statistical analysis was performed using one-way analysis of variance and kappa test to assess the consistency of the two radiologists. Results The image quality of FFDM was proved to be superior to SFM (P<0.05) with the same radiation dose. When the image quality of the two systems was same, the radiation doses were different, the ESD of FFDM system was reduced by 35.3% than SFM system, and the AGD was reduced by 37.1% than SFM system. Conclusions The image quality with FFDM system was proved to be superior to SFM system under the same exposure condition of ACE. When the radiation dose was similar, the image quality with FFDM was also better than the SFM system.
