Abstract:Objective To investigate the clinical value of real-time biplanar echocardiography in evaluating fetal simple ventricular septal defects (VSD). Methods Cardiac abnormalities were screened by conventional two-dimensional echocardiography and real-time biplanar echocardiography. Whether defects exist in muscular part, membranous part and infundibulum part of interventricular septum was determined with the two methods while whether blood flow exist in the above parts was also determined with the two methods combined with Color Doppler. Then the screening sensitivities of the two methods were compared. Results The screening sensitivities of conventional two-dimensional echocardiography and biplanar echocardiography were 68.42% and 86.49%, respectively. There were significant differences between the two methods in diagnosing fetal simple VSD (P<0.05). Conclusion Biplanar echocardiography which plays an important role in diagnosing fetal VSD, not only can clearly display fetal heart structures and blood flow conditions of cardio great vessels, but also can improve the screening sensitivity of fetal VSD.
