Follow-Up Research on Spontaneous Closure of Atrial Septal Defects in Newborns with Echocadiography

Abstract:Objective To observe whether atrial septal defects (ASD) in full-term newborns would spontaneously closed in one year through the follow-up with echocardiography. Methods 103 full-term newborns with ASP were regularly examined with echocardiography to observe the sizes and closure situations of the defects. Results All ASD were secundum type and 56 cases of ASD were determined to be spontaneously closed with echocardiography after one year follow-up. Among the 56 cases of spontaneous closure, there were 38 cases with the diameter of ASD range from 3 mm to 5 mm, 15 cases with the diameter of ASD range from 5 mm to 8 mm and 3 cases with the diameter of ASD range from 5 mm to 8 mm. There were significant differences on the number of spontaneous closure of the three groups. Conclusion Follow-up examination with echocardiography was important for the detection of spontaneous closure in newborns with ASP.
