Abstract:Objective To investigate the safety and feasibility of using a homemade applicator fixator in image guided brachytherapy
(IGBT) for cervical cancer, and to evaluate the clinical value of the homemade applicator fixator. Methods Forty patients with
cervical cancer treated with IGBT at the department of oncology in Affiliated Hospital of Southwest Medical University from January
to December 2017 were retrospectively analyzed and divided into the test group (self-made applicator fixator) and the control
group (adhesive tape). Positional changes of the applicator were evaluated by the rate and degree of displacement of the position
of the apex and base of the uterine canal丨 and the short-term efficacy and acute side effects of each group were followed up after
treatment. Results The displacement of the apex and base of the uterine canal applicator in the left-right and up-down directions
was significantly smaller in the test group than in the control group (P<0.05). The displacement rate of the application group was
significantly lower than that of the control group (11% vs. 16.8%, χ2=8.490, P=0.004). The short-term efficacy and acute side
effects in two groups were similar (P>0.05). Conclusion The adoption of a homemade applicator fixator can effectively stabilize
the applicator in IGBT treatment of cervical cancer and contribute to precise brachytherapy, which has some clinical application
significance.
