Abstract:Objective To explore the application value of MR in the treatment of Parkinson’s disease (PD) using deep brain
stimulation (DBS). Methods 3 T magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was performed on 30 PD cases before DBS and 1.5 T MRI
was performed during the operation. The routine brain MR sequences and the susceptibility weighted imaging (SWI) were adopted.
The qualities of MR images were evaluated by 2 radiologists. The rank sum test was adopted to compare the image quality of each
sequence. Results The subthalamic nucleus (STNs) were visualized as hypointense, biconvex lens-shaped structures on the 3T-SWI,
3 T-T2WI and 1.5 T-T2WI images, while they couldn’t be visualized clearly on 3 T-T1WI images. After comparisons, there were
statistically significant differences between the image qualities of 4 groups. STNs were most clearly visualized on 3 T-SWI (χ2=88.952,
P<0.001). Conclusion Compared to the routine T2WI and T1WI sequences, 3 T-SWI is the optimal sequence to identify STNs. MR
has a high clinical application value in localizing target nucleus of DBS.
