Abstract:Objective To investigate the clinical value of T2*mapping in detecting lumbar intervertebral disk degeneration (IVDD).
Methods T2WI, T1WI and T2*mapping were scanned in 195 patients with low back pain. All data were transfered to the AW4.5
workstation for processing. According to Pfirrmann standard, 732 lumbar intervertebral discs were graded. T2* values of lumbar
intervertebral discs in different grades were measured and quantitativly analyzed. Correlations between T2* values and Pfirrmann
grades were further tested. Results Totally 732 intervertebral discs were finally selected in the study, including 26 in gradeⅠ, 47 in
in gradeⅡ, 233 in grade Ⅲ, 390 in grade Ⅳ, and 36 in grade Ⅴ. T2* values of intervertebral discs decreased while the IVDD grade
increased. Significant differences of T2* values of NP or AF were found between different grades (P<0.05) except that between
gradeⅠandⅡ, and gradeⅡand Ⅲ. T2* values of nucleus pulposus (NP) and annulus fibrosus (AF) were negatively correlated with
the Pfirrmann grades. Conclusion T2* mapping at 1.5 T MRI can objectively and quantitatively evaluate the degeneration of the
lumbar intervertebral disc. T2* values of the lumbar intervertebral disc were negatively related to the Pfirrman grades.
