Abstract:Objective To evaluate the application of prenatal color Doppler ultrasound in detecting
single umbilical artery (SUA) so as to predict the rate of fetal congenital malformation and pregnancy
outcomes. Methods Cases that underwent prenatal color ultrasound from March 2005 to December
2013 were selected. The number of umbilical cords was examined to analyze types of SUA-associated
abnormalities, the relationship between SUA and chromosome anomalies, and pregnancy outcomes. Results
SUA was diagnosed in 72 cases. The left umbilical artery was absent in 44 cases; the right umbilical
artery was absent in 28 cases. SUA as an isolated finding occurred in 53 fetuses; 19 cases had associated
malformations. Chromosomal defects were diagnosed in 8 of 13 cases that had accepted karyotype
examination, including two cases of trisomy 18, one case of trisomy 13, one case of trisomy 21. Conclusion
Most cases of fetuses with isolated SUA showed good pregnancy outcome. Chromosomal
abnormalities happened more frequently in SUA accompanied with other anomalies. Prenatal color
Doppler ultrasonography was of important clinical value in examining number of umbilical arteries and
in prediction of abnormal fetal growth.
