Abstract:Objective To provide the basis for effective maintenance and service of ventilators by
investigating cognitive status of our ICU nurses on ventilator maintenance and service. Methods A
survey was conducted in 82 nurses from four ICUs of our hospital by the means of questionnaire. The
statistical analysis was conducted. Results According to Pareto Chart, the first 5 cognitive deficits were
as follows: one was about ventilator cleaning; four were about ventilator maintenance during use. In the
first five cognitive deficits, the percentage of the nurses who work less than 3 years was 58.46%, which
was higher than those who have more than 3-year working experience. Among different intensive care
units, cognitive deficits in elderly ICU were in the first place. Conclusion Nurses’ knowledge should
be strengthened so as to master ventilators’ maintenance and service. Relevant systems and processes
are developed to improve ventilator usage and to reduce incidence of failure, which ensure the normal
operation of ventilators and provide protection for clinical practice.
